UPDATE 01/20/11 - Updates, and an overhaul, to the Florida Modeling Career web site are waiting for updates to Tampa Bay Modeling, a relaunch of Independent Modeling, and the launch of Advanced Model.
Florida Modeling Career should be up to speed in the Spring of 2011.
We’re also dropping the Ning networking group, which is not up to our standards. Networking for Florida Modeling Career will, eventually, be featured on Independent Modeling. Although the rebooted Independent Modeling will not have portfolio networking features, it is designed to incorporate them eventually. Portfolio and social networking features have been in the works for Independent Modeling since 2004.
Many of the features of Florida Modeling Career, like our sister site Tampa Bay Modeling, will tie into Independent Modeling; with Independent Modeling the most updated site in our online modeling resource array. On the subject of our popular sister site, Tampa Bay Modeling, the site has become the most powerful, and effective, modeling resource site in Florida, picking up the slack of Independent Modeling while it has been on standby. Although idle for years, with most of its work going to Tampa Bay Modeling, Independent Modeling still maintains a close second to the regional modeling resource site. Independent Modeling will become the worlds top modeling resource site soon (with Tampa Bay Modeling currently holding that distinction).
The irony is that Florida Modeling Career was the most advanced modeling resource site when it launched on the summer of 2008, and those advancements are now being incorporated into Tampa Bay Modeling, Independent Modeling, and Advanced Model. We will go full circle in 2011, with the latest tools and resources added to Florida Modeling Career. It’s just going to take time.

UPDATE 11/04/10 - We did a lot of file cleanup of the site today, renaming directories and adjusting the layout of the Florida Modeling Career site (if anyone book marked any old site files, they may not work now, so please, redo your book marks. Effectively, today, we completely took down the old site, deleting all files, and uploaded the new files. It may look the same, but this site is now new). We also disconnected the networking portion of the site, which will not be used anymore, as this is a Florida-region modeling resource site.
This overhaul was needed to bring the site up to compliance of the new web standards for modeling resource sites set by our main core site, Independent Modeling.
Florida Modeling Career will join Tampa Bay Modeling as a top regional modeling resource site, and like our sister site, we will be utilizing the latest Independent Modeling technology, which, ironically, evolved from the advancements which were developed for Florida Modeling Career back in the summer of 2008, over two years ago, when this site was being put together as the most advanced modeling resource site at that time. The latest technology for Independent Modeling is current, and was developed in fall 2010 for full operational rollout in 2011. Florida Modeling Career, Tampa Bay Modeling, and Advanced Model will all benefit from these tools.
As Tampa Bay Modeling needs very little done, and the work that remains to be done on Independent Modeling and Advanced Model will directly benefit Florida Modeling Career, Florida Modeling Career will finally achieve full operational capability by the end of 2010, with a lot of new features and additions to be added in 2011.
Since this site covers all of Florida, expect large city and county area sections on this site to be added soon, which includes Miami and Orlando (as a result, this site will eventually dwarf Tampa bay Modeling in size. We will be much larger). Tampa Bay Modeling will continue to be the primary modeling resource site for the Tampa Bay area, which we are also based in, and published out of. Since Independent Modeling and Advanced Model are also headquartered in the Tampa Bay area, expect the Tampa Bay modeling industry to be ground zero for the revolution which will become the next modeling industry. As far as we are concerned, Tampa Bay is the capital of modeling in Florida, and will become even more important than Miami in the modeling industry over the next few years.

UPDATE 03/19/10 - I haven't forgotten about Florida Modeling Career! Despite the inactivity on this web site, which is still adrift on the Internet, search engine performance is getting a lot better; it should, as it launched on July 16, 2008. The work on Independent Modeling and Tampa Bay Modeling is almost finished, after which they will see regular updates. Advanced Model should launch....... in April 2010, like a spring chick. Sandwiched in between Independent Modeling and Advanced Model, I will take a week to bring this site up to speed, and install the features that should have been installed the summer of 2008 (after which this site will also see regular updates). Like Tampa Bay Modeling, Florida Modeling Career will utilize many of Independent Modeling's features, such as the modeling job board and Risk Analysis System (RAS). Florida Modeling Career should be doing well by its second anniversary in July, and you might recall that Tampa Bay Modeling had a similar evolution.

I have a secret project to do today which will enhance Florida Modeling Career, as well as piss of some people. Remember, kid models: Exploitation is not art, and it has no business mixing with modeling!

UPDATE 10/11/09 - This is annoying. I have the most advanced, effective modeling resource site ever conceived right here, and it has been adrift for over a year. It's like building a super battleship and launching it without a crew and its main guns, and leaving it floating, without power, just offshore. This site is awesome, but it is barely operational (If at all. This is just SAD!). Some parts are missing; it took me a few minutes to figure out the official launch date, and I still don't know if this is the fourth Raptor Class site! So, what happened? Back in July 2008, it launched, but in August some really weird stuff was going on (I could argue that it was one of the worst experiences of my life, and I am still working on legal action to address a crime which was committed against me), and I was sidetracked. I didn't get to do any more updates. In the year since, much of the advanced tools developed for this site have been applied to Tampa Bay Modeling and Independent Modeling. Well, right now I am working on getting Tampa Bay Modeling ready for its fifth anniversary on October 18, 2009. I intend to focus on Florida Modeling Career in late October, and it will be fully, completely operational in November, 2009. This just sucks, but it can be rectified. The opinion section needs to be dropped from the menu, and a market section needs to be added, as well as a modeling blog (or an updates section), among other things (I need to reference some information on the current placeholder index page of Tampa Bay Photographers, and my notes, for clues on what needs to be done here). Grrrr.... hows this going to look in the official account of the history of the Florida Modeling Career site? "Florida Modeling Career launched in July 2008, barely finished, and then was neglected for over a year. In November, 2009, it was finally fully operational, with some of the most advanced modeling career tools and resources ever created online.". I suppose that I will have to spin it. One cool thing, however, is that I can make some last minute improvements to the new tools before I deploy them. This is going to become an incredible site, and it will inspire new work, new tools, and improvements on the other modeling resource sites!

Florida Modeling Career is a sweet site, and it will be the most advanced modeling resource site in the world, being even more effective than Tampa Bay Modeling and Independent modeling. That's worth finishing, and continued work!

Grrrrrrrr...... Florida model Lynn Slawsky was in Brandon, and not Clearwater, when I took that picture of her, too, so that needs to be fixed! I did another shoot with her and another model in Clearwater, however, and that is probably where the mix-up came from. Lynn is a great swimsuit model, by the way!

Florida Modeling Career Tips for Professional Models

1. Do NOT let any modeling agency manage your career. Use several agencies as a source of modeling jobs, and nothing more. A modeling and talent agency is a working conflict of interest and caters to an environment of politics, career manipulation, intimidation of those who they represent, and unbalanced business relationships. How are they a working conflict of interest? They also represent your competition, which are the other models who are competing against you for modeling jobs. How can you trust their advice when they can position other models to have an advantage over you?

2. The modeling agency works for the model. You are their boss, and it is not the other way around. Sure, they may represent models, but they do not employ the models and the models actually employ their services. Until recently, the modeling industry has been unbalanced, elitist, and backwards. Disagree? When was the last time that you saw an employee tell their boss what to do? The employee wouldn't have a job long with that insubordinate attitude. Even so, modeling agencies thrive on this, get away with it, and get off on telling models, who they work for, what to do. This is unacceptable.
Do not let any modeling agency bully you in your career or insult your intelligence by telling you that you are not able to manage your modeling career. When they do this it is a sign that they do not really respect you, and it is an attempt to maintain control over you.

3. Modeling and talent agencies will say that no one will book a model who tries to obtain a modeling job without agency representation because such models are less reliable than agency-referred models. They also will say that their clients, the businesses and art directors looking for models for their jobs, are not qualified to evaluate models without the help of the agency.
This is NOT true!
In recent years, modeling and talent agencies have been losing money because more and more businesses have been booking independent models and those models have been finding and booking modeling jobs without utilizing an agency. Modeling and talent agencies know this, and it threatens their business. They will say ANYTHING to maintain control over their clients!
If any modeling agency states or implies that the models that they represent are more reliable and less of a risk than independent models, have them guarantee it in writing. Don't be surprised when they won't do it. Why do you suppose the won't guarantee their claims in writing?

4. We don't care what supermodel X said in her best-selling modeling book. Some of that advice is biased and caters to the modeling industry that the model is in twined in. The information may not necessarily be in the best interest of the model, and if the model follows it, they will harm their modeling career or will become more vulnerable to being scammed.
Many modeling scams, modeling school scams, modeling agency scams, modeling portfolio photography scams, and model search scams benefit from the so-called advice in these modeling books. Photo mill modeling agency scams and unscrupulous agents who split fees and receive kickbacks from modeling portfolio services thrive on the modeling advice given in these books.
The agency way is no longer the only way, and while many of these famous models realize it, they refuse to acknowledge it because they don't want to undermine the way that they make a living.

5. Find a modeling portfolio photographer and invest in a professional modeling portfolio and composite cards BEFORE you look for a modeling agency.
The photographer is more qualified to help you because photography is the business that they do professionally. A modeling agency will never be as qualified to evaluate a portfolio or to refer models to a "qualified" photographer because they are supposed to be in business to book models into jobs, and nothing more!
Look for a professional photographer who specializes in modeling portfolio or talent headshot photography, preferably one who does both. Look at their photography portfolio with them and note how they did with other models portfolios. Ask for their references and check them too! Also, avoid wedding photographers and photographers who do not demonstrate modeling portfolio work in their portfolio book. These photographers often do not know anything about modeling portfolio photography, and they will do your career more harm than good, as you will not be able to get what you need from them. there are different kinds of photographers, and it is important to find a professional photographer who is qualified in modeling portfolio and talent headshot photography.
Finding a modeling portfolio photographer on your own is the best way to avoid conflicts of interest and to be sure that the agency will only make money doing what they are supposed to do.
We know of photographers who are represented by modeling and talent agencies and who are on their "recommended photographer" lists who are unethical and unprofessional. Any photographer who an agency refers a model to should be scrutinized, as the potential for a photo mill or kickback to the agency exists, and models should be cautious.
It is far safer to find photographers on your own and only allow the agency to do what they are licensed for.

Florida modeling and talent agencies are regulated by the state of Florida under the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). In order to be legal, a Florida modeling and talent agency has to have a Talent Agency license, which is represented by a TA#. The requirements for Talent Agency TA licenses are extensive, and models need to know what those regulations are. Florida modeling and talent agency laws are designed to prevent conflicts of interest situations and situation where modeling agencies can scam models, but in our experience, and in our opinion, smart con artists with the motivation to abuse the laws regulating agencies have been able to do so with few repercussions other than models being upset with them after they were scammed by the modeling agency.
If anyone operates as a Florida modeling and talent agency or attempts to make money by booking models into modeling jobs, and they do not have a TA# Talent agency license, they are committing a third degree FELONY as defined by Florida state statutes. So-called model managers who do not have a TA# Talent Agency license cannot legally make money by booking models into jobs. If they cannot make money, what is their motivation to work for free for the model? No professional is in business to work for no compensation, and no one can keep at it for long without making money. We have never seen any model manager who has turned out to be a legitimate professional or a model manager who has benefited any models career for any length of time. The same goes for so-called modeling consultants and modeling agency referral businesses. All of them are set up to bait the models with the promise of modeling jobs or a "top" modeling career with lots of pay. Once the model is lured in, they are then sold some overpriced service, and are told that they cannot be referred to any modeling job or to any modeling agency until they buy those services. This is a deceptive trade practice, it is technically FRAUD, which is a FELONY, and often the job leads that the model manager or modeling consultant uses to bait the model is fabricated and does not exist (another count of fraud). It is recommended that models avoid model managers, modeling consultants, modeling schools, and modeling portfolio businesses which claim to refer models to modeling and talent agencies.
Read up on Florida modeling agency regulations and licensing requirements if you choose to utilize modeling agencies as a source of modeling jobs. Many models do not bother dealing with modeling agencies, as it is now optional, and the models are able to find and book work on their own.
Florida modeling and talent agencies are only permitted to make money by booking models into jobs. It is against the law and a professional conflict of interest for any modeling agency to make money by selling the model products or services. They also cannot split any fees with any service who they refer models to. This includes, and is not limited to, selling the models modeling portfolios, modeling portfolio photography, modeling composite cards, modeling schools, and so-called modeling classes.
Modeling agencies are in business to make money by finding modeling jobs, referring models to those job leads, and booking models into jobs. They are a middleman. A legal and license modeling and talent agency is not in business to create modeling portfolios, print modeling composite cards, or to do modeling portfolio photography. No modeling agency or talent agent is experienced or qualified enough to give any model advice on modeling portfolio photography, portfolio development, or composite card printing. Modeling agencies are not in that business. Modeling portfolio photographers and graphic designers are more qualified to evaluate and do these services because that is what they are in business to do.
